Pre-surgical Instructions

Weeks before Surgery of any type

The most important requirement is to avoid medications that may cause surgical bleeding, bruising and swelling. The problem medications are aspirin and other “non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs” (NSAID)

Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Alleve and other NSAIDs cause the platelets that start the clotting process to malfunction. These must be stopped 2 weeks before surgery!

The following is a list of products containing aspirin or other NSAIDs:

Alka Seltzer

Corocidin

Phenaphren

Anacin

Darvon Compound

Robaxisal

ASA

Darvon W/Asa

Sine-Off & Sine-Aid

Ascodeen

Darvo-Tran

Trigesic

Apc

Dristan

Vanquish

Ascriptin

Empirin

Zactrin

Aspergum

Emprazil

4-way cold tabs

Aspirin

Equagesic

Toradol

Bufferin

Excedrin

Cephalgesic

Fiorinal

Cheracol Caps

Midol

Children’s Aspirin

There are often new combination products being introduced, so you must check before taking any medication. I can also give you a list of herbal medications that have adverse effects.

  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the anesthesia experience.
  • Please wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes.
  • Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed before surgery.
  • Do not wear lipstick, makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
