IMPLANTS FOR LIP CONTOUR (LIP AUGMENTATION)
|
|
Your lips may lack fullness either as a normal genetic variation or as a result of aging. In either case the lips can be made fuller by implantation of various materials. Most commonly these are achieved by injection of collagen, fat or other materials. However, those injections are temporary and must be replenished every few months. Fat injections have been attempted but generally have been unsuccessful. A permanent or long-term fullness can often be achieved by implantation of Gortex, Alloderm (processed human tissue) or a segment of your own skin. The use of your own skin is called a dermal graft and most commonly is done in conjunction with other cosmetic surgeries that remove skin such as a face lift.
The surgery
- The procedure is done with local anesthesia.
- Incisions are made in the corner of the mouth and a tunnel is made between the lip muscle and the pink part of the lip (vermilion).
- A strip of the desired implant material (dermal graft, Alloderm or Gortex) is threaded into the tunnel
What to expect after surgery
- Moderate or even severe swelling can occur. This swelling can be minimized with ice packs. Swelling may require a week or more to improve and may make speaking somewhat difficult.
- Pain is minimal
- Bruising is minimal
- Return to work and social events may take 1-2 weeks because of swelling
- Absorption of dermal grafts and Alloderm can occur and may take 6-12 months. Permanent survival of the graft is common
- Infection is very uncommon but can occur
