IMPLANTS FOR CHIN ENLARGEMENT (MENTOPLASTY)
|
|
Most commonly, implants are used to build projection and contours of the chin to achieve harmony and balance. The implants are usually made of firm silicone rubber, but can be made from other synthetic compounds such as polyethylene (Medpor), methacrylate, hydroxyapatite (coral) and others. These implants are preformed and are supplied in various sizes and shapes. Some implants are small and only are at the end of the chin. Other implants are wider and extend to the sides of the jaw. Bone cutting procedures are more commonly used for reconstruction of trauma but can be used for cosmetic surgery.
The surgery
The surgical procedure is easily performed with local anesthesia in the office or ambulatory surgery center.
It is often combined with other cosmetic surgeries such as rhinoplasty or liposuction.
An incision can be made under the chin in the natural crease or in the floor of the mouth. The following is a comparison of he two methods
Inside mouth (intraoral) Under the chin (submental) Risk of infection Slightly higher risk Slightly lower risk Risk of nerve injury Slightly higher risk Slightly lower risk Ability to easily access and create a pocket and correctly position the implant More difficult access and positioning Easier access and positioning A space is made in front of the bone and the implant is positioned into that space.
