IMPLANTS FOR CHEEK ENLARGEMENT (MALARPLASTY)

Most commonly, silicone implants are used to build projection and contours of the cheek. The implants are usually made of firm silicone, but can be made from other synthetic compounds such as polyethylene (Medpor), methacrylate, hydroxyapatite (coral) and others. These implants are preformed and are supplied in various sizes and shapes. Some implants are designed to fit on the upper cheek bone and others under the cheek bone. In some cases the chin is enlarged by cutting and shifting the underlying bone (osteotomy). The bone cutting procedures are more commonly used for reconstruction of trauma but can be used for cosmetic surgery.

The surgery

  • The surgical procedure is easily performed with local anesthesia in the office or ambulatory surgery center.
  • It is often combined with other cosmetic surgeries such as rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty or facelift.
  • An incision can be made in the mouth behind the upper lip or and incision can be made under the eyelids
  • A space is made in front of the cheek bone and the implant is positioned into the space.
