“TUMMY TUCK”, ABDOMINOPLASTY

Abdominoplasty, or a “tummy tuck” is the surgical removal of the skin and fat of the lower abdomen. The procedure is designed to correct abdomen protrusion caused by excess skin and fat, and weak abdominal muscles. The abdominal changes may be the result of weight gain or following pregnancy. Rapid weight gain causes the skin to lose its elasticity and develop stretch marks. Intra-abdominal intestinal bloating, and fat deposits around the intestines (mesentery) can cause the abdomen to protrude, but are not altered by liposuction. Patients on a weight-loss plan should be close to their target weight before having the operation. Abdominoplasty is not a substitute for weight loss. Women planning future pregnancies should delay abdominoplasty, as pregnancy may promote further abdominal stretching. The rewards are great for a patient previously distressed by a protruding abdomen. Those who follow a proper exercise routine and healthy diet will benefit from abdominoplasty the most.

Before & After

The Procedure

The skin and fat of the lower abdomen is removed and the abdominal wall muscles are tightened. The goal is a narrower, flatter abdomen. The areas of the upper abdomen, waist and hips may require liposuction at the same operation to achieve overall symmetry. Abdominoplasty is performed using general anesthesia. The procedure is usually done at an outpatient surgical center. You may choose to have a couple days of hospitalization.

  • A smile-shaped incision is made just above the pubic area from one hipbone to the other hipbone.
  • The skin of the lower abdomen is then separated from the underlying muscles. The excess lower abdominal skin and fat is removed.
  • If liposuction is planned for the waistline or upper abdomen, it is done at this time.
  • The separated muscles are tightened with sutures.
  • The remaining skin above the umbilicus is pulled down like a window shade until it reaches the pubic area.
  • The skin over the navel is incised to allow the navel to be pulled through at a new site.
  • A drain is place under the skin to remove any blood accumulations
  • The incisions are then sutured together.
  • Drains are often inserted to eliminate fluid buildup, and firm elastic bandages are applied to the area.

Recovery: What to Expect

  • You may experience some discomfort immediately following surgery that can be controlled with pain pills.
    Some swelling is normal.
  • You will be given special instructions for showering and changing your dressings
  • The surface stitches are removed in 7-10 days.
  • You may also be required to wear a girdle like support garment.
  • The drain may be left in place for 1-3 weeks to prevent fluid pockets
  • Allow at least 2-4 weeks to recuperate before returning to work.
  • Loss of sensation is temporary
  • Possible Complications
  • As with any surgical procedure, complications can occur.
  • Contour irregularities and asymmetries
  • Prominent or wide scars are rare but can occur. \Most heavy scars are in individuals with darker pigmented skin or following poor healing from infection, or excessive tension.
  • Collection of blood or serum under the skin
  • Embolism
  • Serious infection or shock
